It is found that the properties of welded joints, including thermal, are determined when the arc welding methods used by the filler material, which often do not coincide with those of the base metal. It is dealt with an approach to evaluate the formation mechanism of the welding voltage from the position of a general analysis of the main results of dilatometry of the deposited and base metal with definition of a certain temperature of the start and end of polymorphic transformations, as well as the distribution of temperature fields isotherms. This analysis allows to graphically visualize and evaluate the volume of the base metal and weld metal undergoing polymorphic transformations from the standpoint of selection of welding materials and welded with respect to forecast the degree of residual stress in welded joint. It is proposed the ways of reducing the welding stresses. Keywords: stress in welded joints, the isotherm distribution of heat from the weld pool, dilatometric curves.
