It is reported the technique of investigation of motor oils including two-stage: testing – oxidation and temperature control. At each stage the optical properties of motor oils are determined for finding the concentration of the oxidation products or degradation, kinematic viscosity and a comparative analysis of the results is carried out. To implement this technique a device for oxidation of oils, a device for temperature control, a photometer or succinct viscometer are used. It is given the results of investigation of influence of the products of oxidation and thermal degradation on the change of kinematic viscosity and viscosity-temperature dependence. According to the results of research it is constructed a graph of kinematic viscosity, viscosity index of the absorption coefficient of light and viscosity-temperature dependence of engine oils, which determine the dominant influence of oxidation or thermal degradation on the viscosity characteristics of the studied oils. It is found that the products of thermal degradation influence more actively the kinematic viscosity and viscosity-temperature characteristics of motor oils. Keywords: temperature control, photometry, the absorption coefficient of the light flux, kinematic viscosity, viscosity index, viscosity-temperature characteristics.
