Markov A.A., Antipov A.G. Abstract. Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is a method of nondestructive testing applicable to ferromagnetic materials. MFL is used on railways to examine the rail tracks for flaws that could lead to the catastrophic failures. The method implies moving sources of static magnetic field (a magnetization system) act on the rail allowing one to detect anomalies inside the rail based on the field distortion near it. The magnetization system, in which the magnetic flux penetrates into the rail through the wheels of NDT vehicle, with an extended interpole distance increases the magnetization depth at high speeds. This allows detecting deeper located rail flaws as compared with the traditional U-shaped magnetization, which is confirmed by the presented results of new magnetization system testing. High reproducibility of MFL signals enables to automate the detection of connective elements of railway (joints, welds, switches etc.) with adequate reliability. The research shows that MFL also allows to realize the following issues: to effectively control rail welds, assuming the maintenance of time-ordered bank of signals; to monitor the temperature dependent state of the rail using special ferromagnetic labels; to measure the speed of the vehicle using signal correlation technique. Keywords: rail NDT, magnetic flux leakage, MFL, transverse crack.
