Klyuev V.V., Artemiev B.V., Kuzelev N.R., Matveev V.I. Abstract. The causes and consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant occurred twenty-sixth of April 1986 are briefly discussed. There are listed reasonable hypothesis about the causes of the disaster and the most serious mistakes made by plant personnel during the operation led to the exit of the reactor to not operate normally and the subsequent accident. The main generator at the nuclear plant was RBMK-1000. It is a thermal reactor in which the moderator is graphite, a common coolant water. Its main advantage is the possibility of using less rich and cheaper fuel and reloading the fuel elements without stopping the reactor. The results of the work in the aftermath of the accident are the three most affected by radioactive emissions in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Proposals are formulated with the requirement of their implementation to avoid such large-scale disasters in the future. Keywords: technogenic safety, technical systems, engineering objects, accident.
