Markov A. A. Abstract. The article considers the history, modern state and new demands for detection of the cracks in rails according to the current railroad inspection technology. The objectives of nondestructive rail testing are enumerated. For the first time we offer to associate a probability of detection of defects with areas of cross-section in the rail. The most of rail failures (up to 70 %) are resulted from the surface and internal rail head flaws. It is shown that the Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) and visual methods can be effectively applied to the surface areas in addition to the ultrasonic method. The joint analysis of video, MFL and ultrasonic data gives a synergistic effect and essentially increases the defect detection probability. To detect deepseated defects the various ultrasonic techniques are applied. The ultrasonic wheel transducers with an elastic shell are effectively used to evaluate the rail surface. The information about various nondestructive rail testing equipment including innovative ultrasonic tomograph with defect sizing capability is presented. It is shown that only joint application of nondestructive methods ensures adequate detection reliability as applied both to track-laid rail and at rail welding facilities. Keywords: rail NDT, nondestructive testing, ultrasonic methods, magnetic flux leakage method, visual method, transverse crack, detection probability, crack sizing.
