Danilov V. N., Voronkova L. V. Abstract. This article is the first in a series of the publications about the transducer phased array (TPA). They are supposed to give simple description of the physical basics of operation of such transducers without any formulas, which is available to inspectors of all skill levels, the features for differentiating TPA from transducers with regular (whole)piezoelectric element, the advantages and limitations of their application. The features of the TPA straight line signal and the influence of several factors on its characteristics are discussed below. It is shown that the increase of its amplitude in several times at ranges of up to 2 – 3 values of the transducer aperture is provided due to the focus signal TPA in the radiation. The absence of the interference signals of the elementary sources forming the TPA makes the monotony of the dependence of the amplitude of the signal only from TPA range on the acoustic axis when focusing at each point. The area of forming directivity characteristic linear TPA can be roughly defined as its near field, the size of which is approximately equal to its aperture. Increasing the size of the grating elements in the near field of the TPA may lead to low transmitting signal and loss of focus. Keywords: phased array, focal distance, directivity characteristic, nearfield, probe axis.
