Samokrutov A. A., Shevaldykin V. G. Abstract. Ultrasonic Imaging flaw detectors with antenna array entrenched practice of non-destructive testing. However, their advantages over traditional techniques are used only when detecting defects. Evaluation of the same type and size of defects still produced primarily using A-scans. The purpose of article is to find ways to evaluate defects using their images in the image, while maintaining, as far as possible, continuity with traditional methods of assessment. The studies, presented in the article have been fulfilled for flaw detectors, implement digital focus antenna array aperture. The article shows that all informative image defect parameters depend on the ratio of the physical size of the defect and the size of the focal zone grid antenna at the point of the defect. The research suggested that the cumulative image defect amplitude as informative parameter for evaluating defect equivalent size. Defect image size should be used to determine the type of defect and to assess its physical size. In particular, if the image size exceeds the size of the focal zone at half time or more, then this size is almost equal to the physical size of the defect. The difference in the principle of work of flaw detectors with a digital focus aperture from traditional devices requires the development of new norms of evaluation and rejection of defects. Rules for traditional instruments can not be used.
