Davydov D. M. Abstract. The article describes the main technological features of cast steel, affecting the carrying out ultrasonic inspection (UT). It gives a comparison of Russian and European normative documents that regulate ultrasonic testing and evaluation of the casting quality. Also, it deals with the difference between the approaches to estimating parameters of flaws in workpieces made of cast steel. The levels of registration and acceptance for volumetric discontinuities with a measured size of the boundary and internal areas of the casting are significantly different. The method of the rapid measurement of attenuation coefficient of ultrasonic (US) waves in the cast metal with the use of DGS-diagrams was proposed. The results of investigating the reflectivity of casting defects of the equipment showed that the actual flaw size is significantly larger than the size of the artificial reflectors of the type “flat bottom drill” used for setting the control sensitivity, while understated their equivalent size. Keywords: cast steel, ultrasonic inspection, domestic and foreign regulations, sensitivity setting, standards of quality evaluation.
