For the practical application of a new microfocus bremsstrahlung source (photon energy > 1 MeV) based on B-18 betatron the investigations were carried out. The new brems-strahlung source is suitable for the detection of microdefects in heavy material products and technological gaps monitoring of composite structures. The radiography method was used to investigate an assembly structure consisting of six vertically arranged steel blocks. The gaps of 20 μm in width were inserted between surfaces of the blocks. The radiography imaging of the assembly structure, obtained with a 2.4-fold magnification, illustrates a good detecting of gaps between neighboring blocks, due to the small focal spot of the bremsstrahlung source. The results demonstrate an edge phase-contrast due to the high degree of spatial coherence of the radiation. The obtained results testify to the high quality of the radiation beam generated by the microfocus source based on a compact betatron. This type of source can also be used in a laboratory physical experiment, for example, in materials science to study internal boundaries of media and microdefects in the composite materials.
