THE ATTENUATION OF ULTRASONIC VIBRATIONS IN POLYMERS AND POLYMER COMPOSITES, MINIMAL DIMENSIONS OF THE DETECTABLE DEFECTS
(pp. 30-35)

Abstract. The acoustic properties of polymers and polymer composites are investigated. The speed of sound doesn’t depend from the frequency of acoustic vibrations in polymers and in polymer composites, while attenuation of acoustic vibrations in polymers and polymer composites strongly depend on frequency. In polymers and polymer composite materials the attenuation of sound is high, but the sound speed is relatively low, so the search for the solutions to determine the minimal defect dimensions is of interest at the time. Frequency 400 kHz is better for the ultra sound non-destructive testing of polymer and polymer composite articles, though sometimes the defects may be detected at the frequency 50 kHz.

Keywords: structural polymers, polymeric composites, sound velocity, attenuation, minimum defect sizes, echo method, shadow technique, non-destructive testing.
