Markov А. A., Maksimova E. A. Abstract. In the article the questions of ultrasonic flaw detection of rails by mirror through transmission method are considered. This method is based on analysis of the attenuation of the amplitudes of signals reflected from the bottom surface of the tested object (bottom signals) over the defect. The principle of displaying the amplitude curve of bottom signals on the B-scan is presented. The physical nature of the interaction of ultrasonic waves with a defect using the echo method and the mirror through transmission method is fundamentally different. A complex analysis of these methods can increase the probability of detecting of defects in the railneck, head and bottom. The article presents examples of increasing the probability of detecting defects using this information. It is possible to localize sections with the corrosion of the rail bottom where dangerous cracks appear. This method also fixes welded joints of rails, which do not always cause the appearance of signals in ultrasonic channels of flaw detectors. Keywords: non-destructive testing of rails, ultrasonic flaw detection of rails, Mirror Through-Transmission Method of Ultrasonic Nondestructive Testing, amplitude of the bottom signal, amplitude curve of bottom signals, signal recording, B-scan, rail defects.
