There is a growing demand for materials that have a layer of high hardness applied on a soft base. Technologies for obtaining such materials have been developed. One of the technologies is based on the use of surfacing from specialized powder wire. The hardness of such a surfacing is HRC 65. Accordingly, there are difficulties in processing such surfacing. The paper considers the features of milling such surfacings with a face mill with mechanical fastening of replaceable carbide plates. The purpose of the work is to improve the efficiency of the milling cutters and to identify a method by which it is convenient and reliable to diagnose the condition of the cutting plates of the milling cutter. The paper shows that the goal is achieved by using the acoustic emission method, in particular by using the parameter "total count of the number of acoustically active events". Keywords: high hardness materials, end milling, acoustic emission, diagnostics.
