The eddy-current method of nondestructive testing has been compared with X-ray and ultrasonic methods which are usually used in metal-roll production. It is given the advantages of eddy current method for controlling the surface hardness of pipes. Conducted theoretical and experimental studies reveals that eddy current testing is the only nondestructive method allowing to indicate local problems of hardness through protecting and isolating coats. It has high sensitivity and control speed and should apply in final testing the quality of pipe production. Other methods do not allow to detect this type of defects. The validity of nondestructive control is significantly deteriorated without eddy current control in production of big diameter pipes. Described multichannel eddy current system for automated testing of pipes (VD-91NM) gives an opportunity to determine the surface cracks and areas of increased hardness through the protective coating of gas pipes for underwater sea crossings. Keywords: non-destructive testing, eddy current testing, eddy current, local hardening, hardness control, microcracks, weld control, control of the pipe body.
