Rubtsov V.E., Tarasov S.Yu., Kolubaev E.A., Gnyusov S.F. Abstract. In this work we made an attempt to evaluate different non-destructive testing methods for detecting flaws in friction stir weld seams on aluminum alloys. This method of welding does not imply melting and therefore generates specific type of defects. In connection with this, we applied different non-destructive methods such as ultrasonic phase array, eddy current, thermography in combination with the destructive one such as metallography. As a result, we obtained data on the types of the defects and their location in the welds revealed by each used method. On comparing the results of different non-destructive tests we have found confirmation of the necessity of using complex approach to the non-destructive testing of friction stir welds. Keywords: non-destructive testing, friction stir welding, aluminum alloy.
