Chuprin V.A. Abstract. The article focuses on the application of a new class of devices – ultrasonic viscodensitometer to measure the viscosity and density of automotive engine oils. The objects of study are motor oils SAE 0W20, 10W30, 5W40, 10W40, 15W40, 20W50. The results of laboratory measurements are compared with the results of measuring the density and viscosity of engine oils by ultrasonic methods.Researches show that the ultrasonic viscodensitometer allows to measure accurately viscosity and density of motor oils. However, measurements of the oil features by ultrasonic methods should be taken into consideration the fact that motor oils are non-Newtonian fluids as well as the corrective additives in the composition of oils can introduce significant errors. Therefore, calibration of a device requires a cali-bration curve with use up to three reference liquids. Keywords: motor oil, viscosity, density, horizontally-polarized normal wave, symmetric Lamb wave, ultrasonic viscodensitometer.
