Zvyagin A. D., Sosnina O. A. Abstract. Ensuring safe transportation is a key task of railway service. There can be both internal and external reasons for railway accidents. Structural defects fall into the category of internal reasons. A substandard clearance between the bearers of freight cars is one of such defects. The clearances are checked at distribution and freight stations before loading the cars. The operation is performed manually and takes a lot of time, as for each four-axle car four measurements have to be taken with a clearance gauge to a precision of 0.1 mm. Experienced workers who conduct the inspection of cars often guess by eye which bearers have to be checked. Hence, the human factor is involved, and it can lead to substandard bearers being overlooked. In order to automate the detection of cars with substandard bearer clearance, a computer system has been developed, which associates the bearer clearance with the acceleration of rail vibrations resulting from car passing along the rails. This relation was established in a series of tests with trains made up of freight cars. The processing of test results has revealed that the acceleration amplitudes for fault-free and defective cars differ considerably in certain frequency ranges depending on the type of car and its speed. This difference has served as a basis for the computer program, which automatically detects freight cars with substandard clearances between bearers. Keywords: railway car, bearer, acceleration, spectrum, amplitude, system, tests, wheel marker.
