Results of experimental research of the origin and development of thermal fatigue damage in pipes of Æ16x1 mm, Æ16x1,5 mm, Æ16x2 mm and Æ63x3 mm of steel 12X18H10T (12Cr18Ni10T) and 12X18H9T (12Cr18Ni9T) are presented. Investigation is hold on the stand, invented by JSC “NPO CKTIЭ for research cracking of nuclear power plant equipment. Pipes specimens are heated with superheated vapor of water. Places of development of thermal fatigue cracks are cooled with water of ambient temperature. Temperatures, tensions and pressure are measured with a special equipment. Dynamics of development of thermal fatigue cracks using visual measurement, capillary, ultrasonic (with Rayleigh waves) and eddy current testing is researched. Wide nondestructive testing is being developed both during cracks appearance and cracks growth. Also, calculations of thermal stresses arising in pulsation of temperature are performed. The experimental data obtained in preliminary research are compared with the fatigue curves obtained by calculation on regulatory procedures. The chemical composition and mechanical properties of the metal test tubes are defined by experimental way. It is performed metallographic examination of pipes with thermal fatigue damage accumulation. Keywords: thermal fatigue cracks, nuclear power plant, Rayleigh waves, nondestructive testing.
