For work on the linear part of main gas pipelines, requiring disconnection of gas supply and the reduction (removal) of pressure in the case of emergencies a crane unit is designed – a unit on the linear part of the gas pipeline, consisting of one or more cranes, interconnected pipes and fittings. In connection with the emergence of in-service crane unit’s defects, the most dangerous of which are cracks in T-joints welds and others, their diagnosis requires the use of complex methods of non-destructive testing. The objects of crane unit diagnosis are shut-off and regulating valves, underground crane assembly process piping (bypass line and candlestick, bends, welds tees) and portions of the linear part of the pipeline on both sides of the crane unit. The paper describes the technology of non-destructive testing of crane units, including welded joints of pipes with shells on hard to reach areas under the reinforcement plates. The crane units diagnostics experience showed that about 5 % of crane units have critical defects such as cracks in T-joints welds. To solve the problem of T-joints inspection with cover JSC NPC “MOLNIYA” uses the “Augur-T”, an automated ultrasonic testing system specially designed by Ltd. SPC “ECHO +”. It is noted that the developed nondestructive testing technology of pipeline crane units provides the detection of unacceptable defects, including defects in T-joints welds under reinforcement plates which are not reachable for conventional ultrasonic and radiographic testing facilities. Keywords: gas pipeline, block valve stations, tea, non-destructive testing.
