EVALUATING HIDDEN WATER CONTENT IN AVIATION HONEYCOMB PANELS BY USING INFRARED THERMOGRAPHY
(pp. 4-10)

Abstract. Honeycomb structures have a high strength and low weight that favors their use in aviation. An essential drawback of honeycomb panels is possible water ingress during aircraft exploitation. Hidden water increases airplane weight and may lead to panel damage because of water freezing/melting. In this study, potentials of infrared thermography in quantitative evaluation of water ingress in aviation honeycomb panels are analyzed. The modeling of temperature distribution is fulfilled in two cases: water fully fills honeycomb cells or there is an air gap between the water and the panel skin. The most reliable estimation of water content can be achieved if the inspection is being performed simultaneously on both test object surfaces, and the ratio of differential temperature signals observed in defect areas is used as a significant detection parameter. The comparison between passive and active thermal testing procedures applied to panels with frozen water has been fulfilled.

Keywords: thermal nondestructive testing, honeycomb structure, water content, in-frared thermography.
