EVALUATION OF ULTRASONIC INSPECTION RELIABILITY IN AUSTENITIC WELDED JOINTS (WITH USE OF COHERENT SYSTEMS)
(pp. 4-9)

Abstract. One of the characteristics to assess the effectiveness of the methods and apparatus of ultrasonic testing is the dependence of the probability of defects detection byits size. We study the behavior of PoD(a) – the defects detection function for cracks in the austenitic weld which describes the dependence of the probability of defectsdetection, from their height. All presented PoD-curves were plotted based on the results of ultrasonic testing (UT), obtained with the use of Augur automated systems with coherent data treatment or manual inspection. Results of ultrasonic testing of 24 austenite welded joints containing 61cracks were used. The maximum cracksheight was identified by the results of metallographic studies. PoD-curves for automated ultrasonic testing obtained with different mutual position of acoustic transducers, the defect and the weld joint. It allowsto assess the impact of the austenite in welds on the detection of cracks. PoD-curves obtained with automatic and manual testingshow significantly greater reliability of automated ultrasonic testing. Analysis of the results, complemented by the construction of the PoD-curves corresponding to individual groups of inspectors (three groups on manual and automated ultrasonic testing). It is shown that the probability of defects detecting with manual control is connected with the non-certainty in testing results evaluationin small and medium areas of defects heights due to increased noise (for low heights) and the complexity of separating signals from defects and bottom (for medium heights).
