METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF GAS TURBINE ENGINE OPERATIONAL MODES, ON WHICH AXIAL FORCE ON ANGULAR-CONTACT BEARING IS MINIMAL
(pp. 46-48)

Abstract. Axial force exerts on angular contact bearing of gas turbine engine rotor and it is transmitted on the casing through bearing support. A value and behavior of axial force are important parameters and influence on performance capability of bearing and whole engine. Both high and low values of axial force acting on the bearing are dangerous for normal engine operation. In designing the gas turbine engine, the standard size of bearing is selected based on maximal value of axial force. If in further development axial force acting on angular contact bearing exceeds designed value, this bearing has to be replaced with another standard size bearing or pneumatic circuit of the engine should be changed. Operation modes with minimal axial force acting on angular contact bearing are the most dangerous for engine. Therefore, these operation modes should not match steady state operation modes of the engine. This paper presents a new method to detect operation modes with minimal axial force acting on angular contact bearing. This method helps to improve reliability of angular contact bearing and whole gas turbine engine. It is not necessary to modify the design of bearing support to reduce implementation expenses. As vibration transducers are always used during tests of engines and their operation, information from vibration transducers allows to enlarge range of application of described method.

Keywords: axial force, angular-contact bearing, gas turbine engine, vibration spectrum.
