DIAGNOSTICS METHOD FOR THE TECHNICAL STATE OF GAS TURBINE ENGINE REDUCTION GEARBOX COMPONENTS
(pp. 10 - 15)

Abstract. Ensuring of safe performance of gas turbine engine during bench tests as well as in operation is an important engineering problem. It is convenient to use technical diagnostics methods (e.g. based on monitoring of vibrational parameters) to determine the technical condition of the engine. Diagnostics method of technical condition of gas turbine engine gearbox elements, that is described in the paper, allows do define insufficient interference of gearbox components (e.g. gear wheel on the shaft) during bench tests or in operation without engine shutdown, using vibrational parameters (vibration signal spectrum). This method allows to locate the defect and to examine its phase. The method consists of the following steps. Firstly, thresholds of vibration on diagnostics frequencies are defined. Vibration of gearbox casing is measured and stored in the form of amplitude-frequency spectrum in operation of gas turbine engine. After that, the search of the spectrum components on diagnostic frequencies and their comparison with corresponding thresholds are performed. If the threshold is reached by spectrum component, it means that there is a defect inside gearbox. The defect localization can be defined by the quantity of gear teeth, by which element with insufficient interference can be found. If the component on diagnostic frequency dominates in the spectrum of monitored vibration during first starts of gas turbine engine, it means that required interference between the parts of gearbox was not provided during assembly of the engine. If the component on diagnostic frequency dominates in the spectrum during bench tests or in operation of gas turbine engine, it means that reduction of interference of gearbox parts happened in service. Indicated method was implemented during bench tests of gas turbine engine as the part of gas-turbine power generating unit. This method can be used during engine development and as a basis in monitoring systems.

Keywords: reduction gearbox, gas turbine engine, absence of required interference of mating parts, vibration spectrum.
