IMPROVING THE RESULTS RELIABILITY OF ACOUSTIC EMISSION MONITORING OF METAL STRUCTURES
(pp. 16 - 25)

Abstract. The possibilities of industrial structures acoustic emission inspection reliability improvement are considered on the basis of reducing the random noise and interferences in the acoustic signal. An improvement of metal acoustic emission signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is provided in hardware layer by the choice of optimal configuration of the ultrasonic transducers for its installation on the surface with intensified stress-strain state of metal, which has been detected by magnetic inspection, and also in potentially dangerous places of metal structure. In the software layer the metal acoustic emission SNR improvement is reached by wavelet transform of acoustic signals application based on the complex algebraic wavelets. An example of acoustic emission monitoring the bridge elements is given as the illustration of high efficiency of approach to improve the reliability of acoustic emission inspection of the industrial structures.

Keywords: acoustic emission, ultrasonic transducer, defects of metal, stress-strain state of metal, wavelet transform, algebraic wavelet, complex wavelet, signal-to-noise ratio.
