METALLOGRAPHIC MONITORING THE QUALITY OF QUENCHING PERFORMED WITH THE AID OF MULTICHANNEL LASER
(pp. 36 - 39)

Abstract. The paper describes a metallographic study of the effect of integral heat transfer nonuniformity of multichannel (40 rays) СО2 with power radiation output of 3 kW laser on the quality of laser quenching. The intensity difference or absence of separate laser tube irradiation may result in nonuniform microhardness distribution over the width of the strengthened band. In the present work, it is proposed to apply methods of sclerometry for the quality control of strengthened zone and uniformity of heat transfer. Testing scratches were applied on the sample surface with the aid of a Vickers microhardness diamond indenter edge ahead. The sclerometric measurements were based on the average scratch width taken by the scratch bead. The width of the scratches was used to estimate the length of the softening and microhardness values for each measurement point. The obtained data are in good agreement with micro hardness testing and demonstrate the informative possibilities of the sclerometry method.

Keywords: multichannel СО2 laser, laser quenching, sclerometry.
