CONVEX SURFACES OF CFRP STRUCTURES ULTRASONIC TESTING FEATURES BY PHASED ARRAYS AND WATERBOX
(pp. 14-21)

Abstract. Large volume of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) including carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are using in jet’s parts and structures at present time. Some elements of structures have convex surfaces. This is a limitation for manual testing by phased arrays and regular rigid prisms. Aqualen prisms, phased arrays special roller probes and also specialized fixture named waterbox are using for the problem decision. The features of convex surfaces nondestructive testing by phased arrays and waterbox are given at that paper. Researches have been carried out on samples from CFRP with artificial reflectors when using specially developed and made waterbox. In article advantages and shortcomings of such mandrels are formulated. The results of aqualen comparison with latex based rubber as membrane materials are described. Fluoroplastic films were suggested as a means for friction decreasing between membrane and testing object surface. Comparison of a contact pins and roller wheels as positioning elements is carried out. In the conclusion the factors limiting application waterbox at control elements of structures from FRP with curvilinear surface are noted.

Keywords: UT, phased arrays, FRP, CFRP, acoustic contact.
