AUTOMATED ULTRASONIC TESTING OF WELDED WELDS INSTEAD OF RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING
(pp. 9-15)

Abstract. It is dealt with the advantages and disadvantages of radiography and automated ultrasonic testing with a coherent data processing (AUT). Тhe information content and sensitivity of these methods are compared. The possibilities of measuring the size of defects in radiographic and ultrasonic examination are analyzed. It is affirmed that detection and error in determining the geometric dimensions of the defects in the AUT with a coherent treatment of data is sufficient for practical purposes. It gives an example of application of the system with a coherent treatment of data for testing the austenitic welds in pipelines with considerable thickness up to 45 mm. Pipes are used in the construction of a catalytic cracking unit. Timekeeping works showed that the performance of one AUT-welded joints of 50834 mm didn`t exceed 60 minutes with the possibility of other installation.

Keywords: radiographic testing, automated ultrasonic testing, the information content of testing, sensitivity, measurement of defect sizes.
