ACOUSTIC TESTING OF UTILITY POLES
(pp. 26-32)

Abstract. The improvement of the effectiveness and the reliability of power grids is the most important operational issue for power distribution companies all around the world. Today, the overhead lines which mostly consist of wires and poles remain the major and the most important component of grids infrastructure. Therefore, grid companies are paying more attention to utility poles inspection. The common ways of testing utility poles is the invasive method (by using probes or borers), and visual inspection. All these methods are subjective and con not be considered as non-destructive way of testing. Moreover, the using of probes and borers might harm the timber and infect healthy poles (after testing a rotting pole, fungal spores might remain on probe/borer surface). In this article the authors discuss the problem of field inspection of utility poles (electricity posts). In addition to the current issues related to this problem (relevance of the problem and review of existing testing methods), the authors describe in detail their proposed new concept of utility poles testing using the low-frequency acoustic NDT method.

Keywords: nondestructive testing, diagnosis, inspection, wooden poles, posts, overhead lines, ultrasonic, natural frequencies.
