The paper deals with the way to determine average moving melt position using the permanent magnetic field applied to the task of mold liquid metal level control. The sensor design and characteristics are obtained by means of the finite element method and laboratory experience. The suggested level control method performance is confirmed in industrial conditions. Keywords: eddy current testing, steel casting, permanent magnet, mold.
