The article makes a strong case for extending the useful life of equipment with a high proportion of physical and moral deterioration. It puts forward a method of predicting the technical condition of equipment by selecting the optimal reliability function, and develops a program to implement this method. This program is a sequential call of three subroutines using statistical methods of data analysis. The first subroutine performs the primary data processing. The second subroutine calculates the parameters of four distributions (exponential, normal, lognormal and Weibull) and selects the optimal reliability function using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov agreement criterion. The third subroutine visualizes graphs of theoretical and empirical distributions. The program was approved and the study's hypothesis was confirmed: different reliability functions can be used for units of the same type of equipment. Keywords: reliability function, maintenance and repair, Grubbs criterion, Kolmogorov‒Smirnov agreement criterion, Mann‒Kendall test.
