The technological cutting system must be maintained in optimal condition under any external influence on it. It is important to choose what you can use to support it. The results of a study of the possibility of technical diagnostics of the state of the technological cutting system “machine tool‒device‒tool‒part” for monitoring the wear spread of the cutting plates of a prefabricated milling cutter at different positions of the milling cutter and the workpiece are presented. As a result, recommendations have been developed that make it possible to diagnose the condition of the technological cutting system based on the results of monitoring the wear spread of the cutting plates at different positions of the milling cutter and the workpiece. It is found that the magnitude of the spread decreases with the transition from the initial position to the central position and then to the extreme position. This allows us to recommend milling with the specified milling cutter as the final (finishing) at the extreme position of the milling cutter and the workpiece, and the central position and the initial position as the preceding half–finished and rough milling. Keywords: diagnostics of the state of the technological cutting system, milling of high-hardness layers, and the variation in the wear of the cutting plates at different positions of the milling cutter and the workpiece.
