Engine oil is a necessary operating fluid of internal combustion engines, which must be changed in a timely manner when its operational life is exhausted. The use of oil after the exhaustion of its operational life leads to accelerated wear of mechanisms and increased fuel consumption, while premature replacement leads to excessive operating costs and negative environmental impacts. Monitoring the technical condition of the engine oil in real time will contribute to a reasonable and timely oil change. In this paper, some existing methods of oil condition control are considered. Special attention is paid to optical methods, in particular, UV spectroscopy, which is a relatively simple and economical method for assessing the condition of engine oil, but at the same time has limitations related to the selection of measurement conditions to ensure the reliability and repeatability of the results. Experiments were conducted on samples of new and used engine oil, which allowed us to determine the appropriate conditions, in particular, the thickness of the oil sample, to monitor the condition of the engine oil during operation. The results obtained can be used as a basis for the creation of technical devices for monitoring the condition of engine oil in real time, contributing to an increase in the life of internal combustion engines and reducing operating costs. Keywords: engine oil, engine oil diagnostics, engine oil condition, engine oil aging, engine oil degradation, engine oil life, engine oil spectroscopy, engine oil fluorescence.
