Regeneration units with chemisorbents based on alkali and alkaline earth metal superoxides are used to purify the air of confined spaces from respiratory products. During operation, chemisorbents lose their absorption capacity and require replacement in time. In case of abnormal operating conditions and scheduled replacements, the risk of failure increases, resulting in carbon dioxide concentrations exceeding limit values. This paper proposes the method for operative decisions of chemisorbent replacement when their absorption capacity is exhausted. The method is based on the thermal effect of carbon dioxide chemisorption and involves measuring the chemisorbent temperature during chemisorption, determining the specific power of heat sources acting in the chemisorbent layer and determining the desired absorption capacity as a function of the specific power of the chemisorption heat sources. An experimental justification for the method is presented. The results of determining absorption capacity using the developed method differ by no more than 20 % from those obtained using standard chemical analysis. It has been shown that the use of the developed method in abnormal operating modes of the air regeneration unit (when the load on absorbed carbon dioxide exceeds the calculated values) allows to reduce the number of its failures by 20…40 % and the recovery time by 30…50 % Keywords: thermal control, chemisorption, respiratory protection, carbon dioxide, potassium superoxide.
