THE INFLUENCE OF POSITION OF STRESS CORROSION CRACK ON SIGNAL AMPLITUDE OF MULTIPLE-UNIT (MATRIX) EDDY CURRENT PROBE
(pp. 50-61)

Abstract. The study investigates the influence of the length and position of a surface stress-corrosion crack on the signal amplitude of a surface multiple-unit eddy current probe (ECP). Conditions for reliable stress-corrosion crack detection based on the signal amplitude of the multi-element eddy current probe are established. Images of continuity defects on the graphical scan of the main gas pipeline surface constructed from the signal amplitudes of the multi-element eddy current probe (defined as the eddy current image of a continuity defect) provide both quantitative estimates and qualitative information on the geometric parameters of surface break defects. The eddy current image of continuity defects enables the determination of: the distribution pattern of stress-corrosion cracks on the surface of a main gas pipeline, distinguishing between an individual crack and a group of cracks; the configuration of stress-corrosion cracks in the surface plane of a main gas pipeline, including short versus extended cracks and linear versus nonlinear extended cracks, with the capability for quantitative assessment of crack extent. The results demonstrating the identification of geometric parameters of stress-corrosion cracks on main gas pipeline templates are presented.

Keywords: eddy-current flaw detector, multiple-unit eddy current probe, eddy current distribution area, signal amplitude, main gas pipeline, stress-corrosion crack, length of stress corrosion crack, position of stress corrosion crack.
