Bondarenko A. N., Shavrin A. V. Abstract. The Given – Find block of the Mathcad computer algebra system is used to effectively solve the inverse problem of determining the size of a defect from the observed values of the components of the magnetic field of the defect. The influence of the measurement error on the result error is considered. The block also allows, if necessary, to solve the problem of locating the defect. Analytical expressions in the Mathcad environment for the components of the magnetic field of the defect are constructed using a triangular model, which further effectively determine the size of the defect within this model. The discrepancy between the defect model used and the actual defect configuration can lead to large errors significantly exceeding the usual measurement errors resulting from instrument and/or technological imperfections. It is recommended to use the triangular distribution of the magnetic field components when evaluating the defect parameters. Keywords: surface defect, magnetic flaw detection, measurement error, numerical modeling.
