ULTRASONIC WAVES TRANSMISSION THROUGH CFRP BY ANGULAR INCIDENCE
(pp. 42-46)

Abstract. At present time the fiber reinforced plastics especially carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) are widely used in aviation parts and structures. The CFRPs are applied in particu-larly for very critical aircraft parts such as wings panels, mechanization and tail unit. The number and complexity of CFRP monolithic structures increases every year. Therefore, the issue of nondestructive testing is important and relevant despite of the existing testing technology. The article provides the research results of transmission of ultrasonic longitudinal and shear waves into monolithic CFRP specimens with two types of laying scheme (quasiisotropic and [0˚/90˚]) and different angles of ultrasonic oscillation incidences into material. The transmission technique was used to provide the purity of an experiment. The variable angle probes were made to change angles of ultrasonic oscillation incidence into CFRP. Amplification of the detector at which amplitude of the transmitted through the CFRP longitudinal wave amounted approximately 80 % of the detector A-scan screen versus angle incidence curves were plotted by using research results. It is shown that only longitudinal waves with angle of incidence less than 10° are suitable for ultrasonic testing of CFRP monolithic parts and structures by pulse-echo method. The transmitted ultrasonic signals become noise-like at angles of incidence more than 10°. It is difficult to obtain the informative signal. Moreover, it complicates the defects detection and degrades the accuracy of the coordinates determination. Shear waves are not suitable for monolithic CFRP non-destructive testing because of its indistinguishability in structural noises.

Keywords: CFRP, nondestructive testing, ultrasonic waves, angle incidence.
